Centro de Informação e Vigilância Sismovulcânica dos Açores – CIVISA

Azores

Research centers or research group

It constitutes the operational unit of the Research Institute for Volcanology and Risk Assessment (IVAR), it is a private non-profit association whose main objective is to ensure that the design, development, implementation and management of a multiparametric monitoring system is based on scientific and technological knowledge and criteria. This initiative was based on the need to ensure the functioning of an integrated service for the permanent monitoring and information of geological hazards that endanger the safety of populations and the social and economic stability of the Azorean Region.

In practical terms, the operation of CIVISA has been ensured by its own technical and scientific advisory structure, which benefits from close collaboration between the IVAR of the University of the Azores, the Civil Protection Department and Fire Department of the Azores (SRPCBA).

The work that CIVISA has been developing since its inception for the safety and safeguarding of people and goods through permanent monitoring and assessment of the geological hazards affecting the Azores, including technical and scientific advice to regional and local protection authorities, civil society and various other governmental bodies, has been recognized at regional, national and international level.
