    Indian Ocean Research Unit : Spaces and Societies (OIES) brings together
    two teams of lecturer-researchers :

    • Geographers from CREGUR – Centre for Geographical Research at the
      University of Reunion Island
    • Historians from CRESOI – Centre for Research in Indian Ocean Societies.

    This research unit is supported by the Applied Cartography Laboratory.

    The work of OIES focuses on two subject areas :

    • Heritage, Tourism, Territorial Management
    • Power : Territories and Societies

    Interdisciplinary programmes and projects are organised around these
    major themes. Highlighting the work accomplished by all the members of
    the research unit and bringing it to a wider audience, involving regular
    publication of works and articles, organising annual seminars, symposia,
    PhD courses and a large number of international partnerships.

    Areas of expertise

    • History and geography on the themes of the “Indian Ocean :
      Heritage and Tourism” and “Reunion, the Indian Ocean area and the I.O.C.”
    • Expert assessments on Indian Ocean societies (studies and analyses)

    CNRS RESEARCH GROUP ON SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND
    AGROSYSTEM FACTORS in Madagascar University of Lyon
    3 (in progress) Grenoble and OIES / INTERNATIONAL REACH
    The scientific network, International Economy for Development
    (IDE), brings together researchers from some of the major
    European institutions on the subject, with funding provided by
    the CNRS.

    CFSH / NATIONAL REACH
    The aim of the CFSH (French Committee for Historic Sciences) is
    to create links between French historians involved in teaching
    and research.

    CISH / INTERNATIONAL REACH
    The International Committee of Historical Sciences (CISH)
    comprises 50 countries to promote historical sciences through
    international cooperation.

    INDIAN OCEAN INTERNATIONAL CONSORTIUM / INTERNATIONAL
    REACH
    Collaboration with countries on the Indian Ocean rim :
    Mozambique (AFRAMO), S. Africa (IFAS), India (University of
    Pondichery), Tanzania (University of Dar es Salaam), with
    the south-western Indian Ocean : Universities of Comoros,
    Madagascar (Antananarivo), Mauritius (Univ. of Mascareignes)

  • Main research facilities

    The Cartography Laboratory supports research by designing
    and producing illustrations and maps for the publications
    and research work of researchers-lecturers at the Faculty
    (geographers, historians, anthropologists, literature teachers,
    etc.).

    Ongoing : Document on election results in Reunion (1945-1981).

    The Transversal Bureau for Symposia, Research and Publications
    (formerly the Higher Education, Research and Publications Bureau) aims to :

    • promote research and make it more widely available
    • provide logistical support to research centres at the Literature and Social Sciences research unit
