  • research domains

The PVBMT joint research unit (UMR) focus on plant health and studies the diversity of bioagressors, how they adapt to their host plants and their interactions in tropical island land ecosystems. The UMR PVBMT gives structure to 3 research areas :

    • Genomics and epidemiology of emerging pathogens
    • Diversity and sustainable use of genetic plant resources in tropical environments
    • Ecological processes in island environments

Study models include : 2 bacterial species (Xanthomonas and Ralstonia)
1 virus family (begomovirus),2 insect families (Tephritidae and Aleurodidae),
3 cultivated plant species (Vanilla, Coffea, Solanum)

    Areas of expertise
    Plant sciences; Ecology; Evolutionary and Genetic Biology;
Conservation Biology; Agronomics ;Microbiology ;Virology and Entomology

    AGRICULTURAL INNOVATION AND TRANSFER NETWORKS
    (RITA) / NATIONAL NETWORK
To promote the work of the PVBMT beyond Reunion and Mayotte

FAO/IAEA PROGRAMME ON FRUIT FLIES / INTERNATIONAL NETWORK
    2016 – 2020

PUBLIC HEALTH SURVEILLANCE NETWORKS IN THE INDIAN OCEAN / REGIONAL NETWORK

VATEL BIOLOGICAL RESOURCE CENTRE / NATIONAL NETWORK
The Vatel resource centre conserves and studies collections whitin three groups of the following species : flat-leaved vanilla and ancient vegetables. Vatel has 700 vanilla accessions, 40 varieties of tropical garlic and 170 varieties of food crops (mainly
endemic, ancient vegetables from Reunion). The centre has the world’s biggest and best-documented collection of vanilla plants (over 35 species and hybrids from three continents derived from the Vanilla species). Its activities also encompasses heritage, especially under-used vegetable varieties, which are strongly linked to communities and agriculture in the south-western Indian Ocean.

    COST / INTERNATIONAL NETWORK
    – Participation in collaborative projects
    – Joint project with universities in French overseas territories to develop a biodiversity monitoring network to assess biodiversity in the outlying European tropical islands and the impact of global changes

    Partnership with ORs

National park guadeloupe, Antilles, Guyane university; CIRAD-UPR 106 Bioagresseurs Guyana, LDA Martinique

  • Main facilities

The UMR PVBMT uses the 3P Plant Protection Platform as a research tool and operates the platform independently. The platform secured GIS IBiSA certification in 2009 and is still the
    only IBiSA platform overseas.

-PRPV database : Harmful organisms in agriculture in the islands of the south-western Indian Ocean.

-Vatel Biological Resource Centre database (flat-leaved vanilla, tropical garlic and under-used species) uploaded to the Intertrop portal.

-Participation in developing the Arthemis ARTHropod Ecology, Molecular Identification and Systematics database.
