Created on 9 of January, 1976 within the designation of University Institute of the Azores and renamed in 1980 as University of the Azores (UAc), the institution has established itself as one of the main pillars of autonomy and socioeconomic development of the Azores and as a place of excellence for the study of Atlantic issues and island specificities in their most diverse dimensions.
The UAc is structured in three campus located on the islands of São Miguel, Terceira and Faial, and comprises university and polytechnic organic units.
As a result of its framework and of the regional, national and international priorities, UAc is currently focusing on differentiating areas of education and research, such as the sea, including fisheries and aquaculture, and natural hazards such as volcanology and seismology, climatology and meteorology.
There are also other areas of relevant importance, such as biodiversity, biotechnology, biomedicine, agriculture and livestock, geological and energy resources, economics, marketing, sociology, geography, pedagogy, psychology, linguistics and communication, history, philosophy, archeology, political science and new technologies, in particular information and communication technologies and materials.
